Air Quality in Beijing

As a follow-up to our previous post, air quality in Beijing over the past four days was as bad as I have seen it in my 15 years here. Today’s headline in China Daily, Capital’s air quality “worst,” summed it up best. According to the Beijing municipal environmental protection bureau’s website, air quality in Huangcun in the capital’s Daxing district and Liangxiang in Fangshan district was classified as “hazardous” by midday on Sunday. The U.S. embassy in Beijing also qualified the air near its compound in Chaoyang district as “hazardous” in its own measurements.

Mercifully, it rained on Sunday afternoon and evening which broke the weather pattern. Beijingers woke up Monday morning to bright, clear blue skies.
